Adding integers requires adding (if the signs are the same), or subtracting (if the signs are different) their absolute values and understanding the sign of the sum.

When adding integers with the same sign, find the sum of the absolute values.

(-36) + (-12)

|-36| = 36 and |-12| = 12

36 + 12 = 48

So, (-36) + (-12) = -48

Use the same sign as the addends.

When adding integers with different signs, find the difference of the absolute values.

18 + (-14)

|18| = 18 and |-14| = 14

18 - 14 = 4

So, 18 + (-14) = 4

Use the sign of the greater absolute value.
