Random Sample
A sample chosen so that every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
Investigative Question
A question that can be answered by collecting and analyzing data. It usually involves comparing, describing, or finding patterns in data.
Sample of a Population
A smaller group selected from a larger population to collect data or learn about the population.
Representative Sample
A sample that closely reflects the characteristics of the larger population being studied.
Comparative Inference
A conclusion about how two or more groups compare based on data collected from samples of those groups.
Valid Inference
A conclusion that is supported by the data and is reasonable to make based on how the data was collected.
Invalid Inference
A conclusion that is not supported by the data or goes beyond what the data can reasonably tell us.
Bias
A preference or influence that unfairly affects how data is collected, analyzed, or interpreted.
Population
The entire group of people or objects that a statistical study is interested in.
