7.D.3.a Find theoretical and experimental probabilities for compound independent and dependent events.
7.D.3.b Identify complementary events and calculate their probabilities.
Outcome
A possible result of a probability experiment. Example: Rolling a 4 on a number cube is an outcome.
Probability of an Event
A number that describes how likely an event is to happen. Probability can range from 0 to 1, or 0% to 100%.
Event
A specific outcome or group of outcomes from a probability experiment. Example: Rolling an even number is an event.
Dependent Events
Events in which the outcome of one event affects the probability of the other event.
Trial
One repetition of a probability experiment. Example: Rolling a number cube once is one trial.
Theoretical Probability
The probability of an event based on what should happen mathematically, assuming all possible outcomes are known.
Experimental Probability
The probability of an event based on what actually happens when an experiment is performed.
Relative Frequency
The ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials. It can be used to describe experimental probability.
Action
An activity or step performed during a probability experiment that produces an outcome.
Uniform Probability Model
A probability model in which all possible outcomes have the same probability of occurring.
Sample Space
The set of all possible outcomes of a probability experiment.
Probability Model
A description of all possible outcomes and the probability of each outcome occurring.
Independent Event
An event in which the outcome does not affect the probability of another event.
Compound Event
An event that consists of two or more simple events. Example: rolling an even number and flipping heads.
Simulation
An experiment that uses a model to represent a real situation and is repeated to study possible outcomes.
Compound Independent Events
Two or more events that are independent of each other and occur together as part of the same compound event.
